Live at Bimbo's 365 Club in San Francisco, CA.  Dec. 9, 2009

Photos by Rob Moody

During our shoot with The Lovemakers, we met a fun local San Francisco band called The Downer Party.  Our photographer Rob Moody was able to snap a few shots of their performance, then we sat down for a nearly 40-minute filmed interview.  We're still deciding whether to upload the entire thing, but it's probably worth it.  Stay tuned for more!

This is the official bio from the band's MySpace page:

Hi, My band is called the Downer Party. We formed in San Francisco in 2008. The Downer Party has always been me and my best friend, Sam. He plays bass really well.

I was 18 years old then and had just left my previous project of two years, a band called Elephone that enjoyed some mentionable, but not that mentionable success in the bay area. The other members of Elephone were all about 20 years older than me, and after a couple of years of trying to carry myself like someone in their late 30’s(with only very limited success), I was ready to be a kid again. In a major way.

Sam and I spent about six months in late 2008 and early 2009 partying our asses off. We made friends and made out and drank like fish and then tried walking like fish, but we were too drunk to pull that one off and decided to go back to drinking like fish. We went through four notable, but not that notable drummers and created an EP titled Ego Driven Lust Creatures which we had the pleasure of releasing on San Francisco’s Popsmear Records. Those recordings received, and continue to receive (knock on wood!), some modest airplay on the Bay Area’s Live 105.3 FM, KALX, and KUSF. We’re pretty stoked on that. We played some awesome shows up here in the bay area and down in LA. We almost moved to New York without telling our friends or family but at the last minute, we reckoned it would be too hard to find jobs out there and grumpily decided to stay in California.

Over the summer I think we’ve mellowed out a little bit. Sam and I have both, in our separate ways, come to see that playing music, and more importantly, making music together is what we live for. We’ve started dedicating more time to working on our band, and less time muck running. We even considered changing our band’s name to The Downer Gathering of Close Friends or The Dinner Party. Hahaha! Just kidding.

This otherwise nominal change in attitude led us to seek a new and truer artistic match by way of drummers. After literally weeks of searching, we found our guy and have welcomed the highly notable Colin Popaduik into our band. Additionally, we have taken on a fourth and final member, an old and dear friend of mine, August Churchill. He plays lots of instruments and has proven to be outlandishly useful and nice. The four of us are scheduled to begin tracking our new EP in November and are aiming for a release sometime in the early spring.

So that’s it! Those are all of the facts about my band! I hope this bio wasn’t too amateur. I tried paying a guy on craigslist to write one for us, but he wound up taking my money and never calling me back.

Have a bitchin’ summer,

Sierra Frost
